Suchitoto: Centro Arte para la Paz

Suchitoto is a beautiful, historical town that we visited where we had the opportunity to eat lunch at Villa Balanza where they had interesting historical artifacts all throughout the restaurant. The food was delicious!!! After lunch, we visited with Sister Peggy at the Centro Arte de Paz (Art for Peace Center) which is at a church that is currently being remodeled in Suchitoto. At this church, the art of the children and adolescents are on display, used as decoration for the center. Sister Peggy has been in El Salvador for over 30 years, ever since the war began. She is very much involved in the art center where children in the community will be able to come and express themselves through different forms of art, whether it be making something, dancing, acting, singing, or learning to play a musical instrument, etc. It's all on a volunteer basis, so if you would like to teach children and adolescents a form of art, whatever it may be, Sister Peggy would love to have you come. During our discussion with Sister Peggy she discussed the importance of social justice and that as social workers, we had to do what we believed is the right thing versus what others want me to do. She also reminded us that self-care in our profession is very important and she is absolutely right since we carry the problems and issues of our clients upon our shoulders. This should not be the case, but it happens often because we care so much about the success of our participants. Sister Peggy was such an inspiration, although a nun, she is very much a social worker at heart full of knowledge and wisdom.
